Path to Promotion!

This year is the year of efficiency for the tech sector! Less number of raises and more layoffs. So, it is important to keep the spirit up!

We are naturally inclined to think about future achievements but sometimes it is important to go back in time and relive the moment when you excelled.

In the summer of 2013, I was in India visiting family. One morning, I got an email from my boss asking about a phone number to reach me in India. I was curious and a little anxious. Next day, he called and shared that he wanted to give me some special news. My curiosity grew up to the top. I was eagerly waiting to hear what he said next.

“Priya, I want to tell you that your contribution to the team is highly appreciated this year and you have been promoted to the next level. Congratulations and celebrate this news with your family in India!”

On the surface, this is general promotion news. The reason this news was special to me and my manager Vijay Krishna at the time was because I was still working part-time. Receiving a promotion when working part-time is very rare. It is hard for the employee and also their manager. It takes conscious efforts on both sides to make a case and actually get it.

Today, when I recall the moment, I truly feel grateful to my manager. He kept tremendous faith in me and made sure I am working on impactful assignments.

On my side, I was disciplined about my time at work. Especially in the days when my kids were little and life was full of new responsibilities.

Making a list of 3 most important things for the week and following through its execution was the key. Just spending 30 mins a week thinking and doing things for my product or team which are beyond my regular job was the real differentiator.

Having faith in yourself and ability to execute will enable you to break the norm!
